How youtube thumbnails get generated

A channel that publishes weekly needs a thumbnail that is recognisably the same series but obviously a different episode. Doing that by hand invites drift — the title creeps two points smaller, the accent colour is almost the previous one, and after thirty videos the grid looks untidy. A template pins the parts that make it a series and leaves the episode title, the face shot and the accent colour as the parts that move. Channels that publish on a schedule often generate a whole season of thumbnails at once from an episode list, then only revisit the ones that need a different photo. Text auto-fit is doing real work here: episode titles vary wildly in length and still have to fill the same box.

In practice: Usually a batch job against an episode list. Some channels wire it into their publishing pipeline so the thumbnail renders when the episode record is created.

Fields you'd usually bind

{{episode_title}}
The big line. Auto-fit scales it to the box rather than overflowing.
{{face_image}}
The presenter shot, cut out or cropped per episode.
{{episode_number}}
Series position, where the channel shows one.
{{accent_color}}
Per-topic colour coding, kept to the channel palette.

Any text, image, QR code or barcode on the canvas can become a variable — these are just the ones this category tends to use.
